At the premium level, power consumption isn't your main worry. It's similar to criticizing the 4090 for using too much energy.

i reside in belgium with extremely high energy costs, so i needed a powerful yet efficient setup. i chose the 7800x3d as it offers the optimal balance. currently, i’m using an asus rog strix vega 64. i overclocked both and lowered the gpu’s power limit by about 15% (210-230w), while setting the cpu to 65w eco mode. when checking benchmarks for vega 64 power usage, most systems report consumption between 350-375w. mine draws 420-440w, but the cpu and gpu consume significantly less. the only reason i can think of is that my high-end motherboard consumes far more than necessary.

When measuring near the wall, power usage includes losses from the PSU conversion. A more efficient PSU might make a difference. I haven't tested it myself, but running RAM at reduced speed and lower voltage could help slightly. Another method I used before to achieve very low power was turning off unnecessary devices in the BIOS. Back then, we focused on serial and parallel ports. It's unclear exactly which components to disable now. If you have several network adapters, turn off all except the one you actually use—for example, disable the external USB sound card. This might not save much, but it could contribute if you're aiming for maximum efficiency.

If your power supply operates at 92% efficiency, generating 350 watts requires about 380 watts from the socket. That explains the typical 40-50 watt difference. The B650 chipset has a 7-watt TDP, while x670 is essentially two of those chips, totaling around 14 watts. Your setup likely uses about 10 watts, possibly less. DDR5 usage probably adds only 3-5 watts per stick, with Crucial/Micron estimating roughly 3 watts per 8 GB. Onboard audio and network contribute 2-5 watts each, and the VRM controller may add extra power use. If the controller runs unnecessary phases, conversion losses can further impact performance.

I don’t have SATA drives, so I turned off SATA in the BIOS and activated a feature named Ultra Energy Saving Mode. I’m about to test it now. Edit: it did jack shit. Updated September 16, 2023 by JoHeJo06

When there are no SATA devices connected, the controller enters a low-power state, using around 0.1 watts or similar. You might notice changes by turning off PCI-E 5.0 and adjusting fans to shut down when internal temperature drops below 65°C.

Even if we halved the energy use of your motherboard, it still pales next to other savings options: - simply turning off your computer when idle. - reducing the number of devices that stay on standby. - switching off lights assuming LEDs are standard. - lowering the heater temperature by half a degree in winter. - using natural ventilation instead of air conditioning. The government might even offer you incentives for lowering your home’s power consumption. Also, your motherboard isn’t drawing 80 watts, and even the IO die on Epyc isn’t that high.
