Hello everyone, I’ve recently moved to a new living situation and now lack a wired internet connection, so I’m using WiFi instead. The issue is this: my motherboard (Crosshair VIII Hero) doesn’t include a built-in WLAN card, and the only PCI slot available is already occupied by a USB expansion card for flight sim peripherals. I can’t use wireless access points because I need direct router access to set them up, which isn’t possible. I’m wondering if adding a WLAN card in the larger 8x or 16x slots would work without damaging any components or wasting my money. Any advice would be greatly appreciated—I’m currently relying on a USB WiFi dongle for my tower PC. Thanks.
You definitely can. A smaller PCI-E card will fit perfectly in any bigger PCI-E slot—like an x1 card works anywhere, and an x4 card fits any x4, x8, or x16 slot.
