You're right, it's quite an unpleasant experience. It might be worth sticking with Linux instead. Based on my attempts, Linux runs smoothly even on USB 2.0, just like an SSD, while Windows feels sluggish—especially when opening the Start menu, which took around 10 seconds. I was using a standard USB 3.0 drive for Windows 10.
