Hey, I spotted the 6C/12T Xeon X5675 and 4C/8T X5687 at a great price. I'm moving from my Xeon X5450 and also checking out an X58 board. Are these chips suitable for rendering and gaming? Also, will work well with the R9 280X GPU?
Not anymore. I mean you are going from an ancient too weak cpu to an ancient weak cpu that already cannot launch some games. So yeah do not waste your money on over a decade old hardware and follow the advice given in multiple threads for your before and save up for a ryzen config or IF and ONLY IF you really really really cannot get 250$ togheter somehow. Get a used random dell, lenovo,.. whatever that accepts STANDARD PSUS with a i7 2600, 3770, 4700 or newer cpu. Those are basically the bottom of the barrel cpu's for gaming todays that you can aim fair. Yes the x58 xeon has more cores but more cores are useless when the single core performance isn't there. Or you lack instruction sets that are not on older cpu's that you NEED to launch certain programs.
The xeon model uses the first core-i architecture, while many affordable versions come from the second through fourth generation.
I wouldn't invest any money in the 1366 platform. The 1155 model is the most reliable I've seen so far. Nehalem isn't a good choice.
It’s going to be terrible unless you push it to its limits, then it’d be just fine.
Choose the 1600X paired with a solid B450 board. It performs significantly better than an X58 Xeon.
New B450 models are very affordable. I’m willing to spend up to $250 for the essentials—CPU, board, RAM, and case.
