This image shows me moving through Alexandria in AC Origins, the toughest city in the most challenging game I own. Why does a stock 5800X jump to 4400 MHz? Is the voltage excessive? I've noticed it can spike up to 85-86°C for a brief moment before returning to the low 70s. This only happens during loading new areas, like fast travel or cutscenes. I don't know what's going on with cutscenes in this game, but usually they're around the high 60s to mid-70s and these spikes aren't common. It cools down with a Cooler Master MasterLiquid ML240L RGB V2, built into an Asus Tuf GT501 with six fans. The GPU handles over 66°C under full load, which means good airflow. Should I lower the voltage or cap clock speeds at around 4000?

The temperatures are manageable. Even at the highest reading of 86°C, you’re still only a few degrees away from concern about overheating. Regarding clock speeds, I’m not entirely confident about your worry there. The system should be capable of reaching up to 4.7GHz, though that’s for a single core and only on the fastest processor. A 4.4GHz frequency is what you’d typically see for a multicore setup. You’re aiming for as high a frequency as possible, which makes sense. Locking it down at 4GHz wouldn’t be practical—it would mean missing out on potential savings, like getting a 3700X performance boost. You mentioned voltage, but didn’t specify the value. Under load, Ryzen usually drops to around 1.35V, though it can rise slightly to 1.4–1.5V, which is completely normal. Overall, everything looks fine. It’s hard to understand why you’re so concerned.

Typically it's around 1.45 volts. The 86°C spike isn't a concern if it's just a temporary rise, not a sustained temperature.

It might not be ideal even at that temperature, but it wouldn’t cause any major problems. Performance would still be solid, and there’s no risk of damage. A quick spike isn’t a concern.

It makes sense to me. The Ryzen 7 5800X tends to get warm, similar to a 11900K CPU, which may make the cooler work harder.

As an owner of a 5800x, I also worried about my temps. Seeing temps spiking into the 80's and hitting 90c under high loads is apparently "by design" according to AMD, so nothing to really worry about there. I've sinced tinkered around with PBO settings in the bios as well as curve optimizer to lower my temps at the expense of around 2-4% performance just so i felt a little more at ease, but it's by no means necessary. Gaming temps around the 60-70c range is absolutely fine also, so don't worry yourself too much ^-^

They won’t let too high a current flow either. If the issue remains, you’d need to access the BIOS and disable these safeguards (if possible) and then attempt something extreme like forcing a voltage of 1.5V+ to risk damage. Anything less than that makes causing harm nearly impossible. The same holds true for most other system components, such as GPUs and SSDs, which are built to throttle and stop before any real harm happens.
