I'm playing Doom (1993) from Gamepass and I keep hearing a xylophone sound and can't figure out where it's coming from or what's making the sound. I've looked it up in the manual and nothing about it seems to be online anywhere. It's about as annoying as the mouse controls lol, but hey, that's the 90's for you. I'm doing Inferno: Limbo standing int he main area. Is it the teleporters making that sound?

I tried this game when it first launched and don’t recall anything similar. Are you certain it isn’t just one of those bothersome Windows alerts? I made a short recording of the different sounds for comparison... If it matches, that’s probably what you’re hearing. 893693133_WindowsNotificationSounds.mp3

You have the option to turn off all window notifications by navigating to System Sounds settings and choosing a no-sound profile

It clearly isn't a Windows sound. Check the video at around 0:38—you'll notice it. I'm curious whether it's a hidden feature in the game or just an irritating tone with no meaning.

Do you currently have any aftermarket audio components? The sound quality seems altered, suggesting possible interference from external sources. It appears more refined than before, but remember my equipment was a 16-bit Sound Blaster while modern systems use 32 or 64-bit processors. Even then, differences existed between older PCjr/Tandy models and newer gear like the Roland MT-32. Today’s built-in audio often surpasses even those devices.

Additional note: There’s an options menu possibly allowing adjustments for various sound profiles if you find it bothersome.

I don't believe that's the issue. I'm using GamePass on a custom-built PC. The audio from my PC doesn't seem off—playing the game on different computers gives the same sound, and it also matches what I hear in YouTube videos. I can pause in the game without any problems.

Interesting. Those teleporters in the earlier build usually produced a brief zapping noise rather than something else. Is this happening in a tougher difficulty setting, or are defeated enemies coming back to life?

I'm testing Hurt me a lot and aim to crank it up soon because it's surprisingly tough after playing Doom Eternal on the same. Sorry, but I haven't seen any respawns yet. The sound doesn't seem to match a teleporter either. It was also happening in an earlier level where there were no teleporters at all. I don't remember the name of that level. I might check the game files to track down the chime, but it could take a long time.

LOL... You haven't seen much yet... Death Incarnate needs the god mode cheat (IDDQD). Since dead enemies come back and keep jumping around, it really helps. Without the cheat, you'll only survive a few seconds. Does the sound play when you've finished fighting and are still standing still?

I’m excited about the high blood pressure. Just finished beating the Icon and going back through the game to revisit all the things I missed at first. I plan to tackle the toughest challenges this game has to offer. And yes, the sound does play too. Honestly, it was awkward but fun—I kept running around after finishing the level, chasing the exit while hearing the chime. That curiosity sparked my search for more info. I found a forum post mentioning "doom eternal xylophone" and some music tracks, but nothing about this specific sound. Checking the 1993 manual was a breeze—I’d be three years old if it were that easy. I also watched YouTube clips where people recreated the same audio, but no one discussed it. I left comments, but nobody replied. I know how comments work on YouTube, so it’s possible they didn’t see it. I run a channel with 25k subscribers, so I figured you’d understand. I’m just being honest—sometimes I’m a bit sleep-deprived.
