They’re only offering the beta as an upgrade, that’s what I heard. As for DirectX 12 and VRAM stacking, it seems Mantle supports it but there’s no mention of DirectX 12 in the info I found. Hopefully that works since I have 3.5GB of VRAM.

It seems to be about a release version around 8.1, recalling a statement from Linus about Windows 7 not receiving it.

Windows 7 won't work with it. It lacks broad support and there are no new updates planned. Version 8.1 could possibly run, though I doubt it. It might end up being a Windows 10-only release.

Even if it does happen, you’re sure the XP and 7 master race guys will adapt it somehow. At the very least Linux might attempt a port, or else I’ll be spending time building it myself. I’m really excited about Multi-Vendor GPU support—using an AMD card with a NVIDIA chip, for example.

Linux has never supported DirectX. As far as I know, nobody has got it working. It's not a regular application - it's a series of collections of APIs that integrate deep into the operating system. With the differences between Linux and Windows NT, there is no way how DX can run on Linux. XP won't get it either, as a lot of new stuff was introduced with Vista, along with DX10. Did anybody port DX10 to XP? No. Vista, 7, 8 and 8.1 MIGHT (if absolutely everything goes well) get it. MIGHT.

Great point, but I’m going to yell until I find out how to make it work on Ubuntu or Linux. I didn’t mean to add XP there—it would be way harder than starting from scratch. Oh, and I hope that’s not what you meant for Linus. Ugh, I really want it!

As mentioned earlier, DX behaves differently from standard apps. Simply launching the installer—usually through Windows Update—won’t suffice.
