Most current first-person shooters feel uninteresting. The best choice is CS:GO.
Counter-Strike various editions. Battlefield 1942 offers a cost-effective option that’s free to play, though purchasing weapons later adds up over time.
You're not limited to the present—exploring the past reveals other classic titles like Half-Life 2, F.E.A.R (and its sequels), Doom 3, and Quake 4. All remain engaging shooters even after many years.
I was considering buying Counter Strike GO, since I just finished the F.E.A.R series. I plan to get Doom 3, and I haven’t really thought about that one before. Thanks for the recommendations!
Give Quake 4 a look too then, it's really very similar to Doom 3. (I tend to think more highly of it than most others seem to though, so there's that =P)
CS:GO can be quite harsh depending on your computer's capabilities. For lower settings it might work, but I’d suggest trying Shadow Warrior and Hard Reset first—they’re solid options. Far Cry 3 on reduced settings was one of the better FPS experiences I had recently, though you’ll need to purchase it from Ubershit now. You might also enjoy classic titles like UT2K4, Quake Live, CoD 1 & 2, Medal of Honor Allied Assault, Half Life 1 & 2, FEAR, Duke Nukem 3D Atomic Edition, Rise of the Triads (new version available), Painkiller, Bulletstorm (despite the jokes), Crysis, Portal 1 & 2, Shogo: Mobile Armor Devision, Hexen, Blood, and Doom. There are many great games available for free with DRM removal on gog.com.
