I recently assembled my own gaming PC for the first time. I purchased a Ryzen 7 7700X paired with the Assassin 120 SE. However, during gameplay my temps remain quite high, even when not running anything. As a beginner, I’m unsure if this is normal. Perhaps the CPU cooler wasn’t installed properly, and I might need to replace it, which is why I’m reaching out for advice. My cooling setup: cooler fans at 43°C, 40% at 63°C, 53% at 75°C, 70% at 85°C, and all case fans at 43°C, 35% at 55°C, 45% at 65°C, 65% at 85°C, and 100% at 85°C. My case is the Corsair 4000D. The front has three fans for intake, one above the cooler for intake, and a rear fan for exhaust. Temperatures: idle around 45-47°C; gaming in Red Dead Redemption 2 reaches 68-75°C, and Cinebench peaks at 85-90°C.

That's fairly common. AMD's boost algorithm is very aggressive in an attempt to make the system feel more responsive. Because of this, at the first sign that you're going to be doing something, it boosts up to the max single core boost. That first sign can be anything from Windows checking for updates to even just starting to move the mouse, so "idle" doesn't really exist. Just base your thermal performance on how well your load thermals are, and the temperature alone looks like what I'd expect for RDR2 and Cinebench. That said, because of that boost algorithm, load temps aren't actually that accurate at measuring thermal performance as the CPU will just vary the voltage and clock speed to stay at the same temps, so the actual way to measure thermal performance nowadays weirdly enough is to measure the performance.
