Absolutely, it's a solid choice. Using an Asus Bluetooth adapter and configuring SCP works well. It's clearly better than the Xbox alternative.
Playing many emulators is fine thanks to the D-Pad, but if you don’t use them much, say no. I like the 360 experience more and don’t like the build quality. If someone knows they’re abusing controls, the PS3 works better. It won’t be as stable in games compared to an XB360 CON. Some indie titles or bad ports can cause problems. For instance, a few games I can’t get Razor Sabertooth to run on. Remember, the Sabertooth runs on 360 too, but occasionally certain games behave strangely. The same goes for my DS4 when emulating an XB360 CON—sometimes a game just won’t cooperate even though it’s labeled as such.
It's worthwhile, many titles improve when played with a controller, such as the Batman Arkham series.
I use the PS4 controller, it functions perfectly. Upgrading to a PS3 controller would be nice too. Get a Bluetooth adapter for wireless use (around $15).
The DS3 is fine; it worked well on my PC for years without major issues except for driver problems. If you have the budget, I suggest the DS4—it's a noticeable improvement over the DS3.
