I plan to take advantage of Valve's situation and purchase a VR headset to experience Half-Life: Alyx.
VR headsets are relatively expensive in the UK (new from UK retailers) and I prefer not to spend much.
My main choices are:
- £140 Oculus Go (32 GB)
- £190 Oculus Go (64 GB)
- £395 Oculus Rift S
- £400 Oculus Quest (64 GB)
- £460 Valve Index
(headset only)
- £500 Oculus Quest (128 GB)
- £600 Vive Pro
- £600 Vive Cosmos
- £690 Valve Index (with controllers)
- £900 Vive Pro (full kit)
- £920 Valve Index (full kit)
Europe, including the UK, currently lacks Windows Mixed Reality.
Can the Oculus Go now support Steam VR? (which would let me use games without installing them on the device)
I’m okay with being connected via cable since I’ll be seated next to my PC.
Do I need additional accessories beyond what comes with the Oculus Go?
Not quite right. It lacks properly tracked controllers, making it impossible for SteamVR content to function effectively. This includes Half-Life Alyx. The Oculus Quest offers superior quality and features compared to the Oculus Go, and it provides excellent value for money. On a tight budget, the Quest and Rift S are the best choices. The Rift S remains superior as a dedicated PC headset, while the Quest's standalone performance is impressive on its own.
PS: Windows Mixed Reality headsets can be found on amazon.co.uk, though they don’t stand out much. Samsung models aren’t available in Europe.
Every major PC VR headset supports games from the primary platforms like Steam and Oculus.
Ok, thanks. BTW, did you hear about driver4vr? I plan to get a VR headset because of Beat Saber (mostly, the only game except some sandboxes and archery that makes me want to buy it), but if there are cheaper alternatives that work good enough, I would be glad to learn about them.
