Current motherboard: ROG STRIX B450-F Gaming Upgrading boot drive from SATA to M.2 SSD is on my list. I found a Gen4 model on Amazon, but I heard the B450 doesn’t support Gen4 SSDs. Would that slow it down to Gen3 speeds instead? Or are there other factors at play?

It seems you should likely stick with a Gen 3 SSD for that board. I don’t know of any Gen 4 options that are cheaper, so saving money makes sense with the Gen 3 drive.

PCIe4 offers little benefit for boards that can handle it, as the speed gains are minimal beyond 3400-3500 Mbps. Additionally, performance tends to drop under continuous write operations.

I have a Gen4 in the Gen4 slot and a Gen3 in the Gen3 slot, both working equally well. My boot drive is an SN850 Black, and my storage drive is an SN750 Black.
