Hi, Ping! I see you're having trouble with Fortnite latency. You mentioned being in North Dakota with a 6ms local ping, but your ping is much higher—around 60-70. That’s unusual since you have good download speeds (1000Mbps down, 20Mbps up). It could be due to server distance or network congestion. If you're planning to move next summer, consider checking nearby cities with lower latency or look into streaming options that optimize performance. Let me know if you want more tips!

You might be linked to a server located far from your position. The speed of light is approximately 186k miles per second... meaning roughly 186 miles each millisecond. For instance, the server could be in Dallas, Texas—about 1200 miles away from you—and New York is around 1600 miles distant. Multiple routing steps also contribute to delays, as there might not be a direct optical fiber connection all the way. Certain routes can become busy (for example, your ISP handles 12-15 gbps of traffic but forces it into a 10 gbps fiber, raising latency for some packets). A possible fix is to locate a VPN or nearby datacenter close to you offering minimal latency and high bandwidth across the US. You could establish a VPN or proxy on a server in that datacenter, which would allow faster connections—say, 5ms to your datacenter and 30ms to New York instead of the usual 50ms to NY.

I recently counted 13 hops. Can you find a way to improve this or switch ISPs, even if the difference seems small?

I might have misunderstood, but a high ping of X on one server doesn't guarantee the same on another. Factors like distance, server load, and more influence the result. For instance, Speedtest.net shows my overall ping at 11ms, but my dedicated server ping is 72ms, while CS:GO servers are around 48ms.

I'm unsure about the reliability of those suggestions. Many websites highlight ExpressVPN, VyprVPN, and IPVanish for gaming VPNs, but I can't confirm if they're trustworthy. VyprVPN promises a tier 1 network and a 3-day free trial—maybe begin there. The rest of the recommendations feel like marketing tactics to boost sales.
