I thought that too. Even at 5.3ghz it’s a challenge. My 8700K might hit 5.4ghz when HT is off, and the bench runs well, but I’d avoid prime95. That could break the loop fast. Edit—cooler water would help. At 5ghz I can push up to 1.360v, which is fine for prime.
I own a substantial budget with 12.6k and a 660m mortar max DDM4 OC from BCLK down to 111MHz all cores at 4.996GHz, E core at 3.995GHz. I’ve connected it via BCLK to 111MHz, using a 4x8 Crucial Ballistix 3600 CL16 OC up to 3885MHz with BCLK as well. The system appears stable, especially with XMP settings on Cinebench R23 during a 10-minute stress test. Load was Vcore 1.204V, peak power reached 164W, max recorded temperature was 83°C, and Vcore during single-threaded CineBinch R23 testing was 1.31. The turbo boost peaked at 5.439GHz, while Prime95 achieved 95 small FFTs with 213W at Vcore 1.176. After a few minutes it throttled down and stayed at 198W. I have a Noctua Redux cooler, which isn’t top-of-the-line, but it performed well thanks to low voltages. It seems I might have hit something special—let me know if you want to review the bios!
