This P3 Slot layout was created by Intel. Early Intel Pentiums (P1) and Celeron chips used a FCPGA - Flip Chip Pin Grid Array design, similar to what Slot 1 looked like. AMD followed the same approach with Slot A. Over time, people thought it was unnecessary and returned to using standard chip designs.
The current signal speeds make this approach no longer practical. I favor Intel's IHS styles not only for their appearance but also because they secure the CPU properly.
