It seems like a confusing issue, especially with your MacBook models from that period. You mentioned swapping SSDs between your Air and Pro, which might have caused the problem you're experiencing. The file icon and question mark could indicate a file system error or compatibility issue.
They seem to work together physically but are protected to link them back to the initial device
Are there alternatives available? If you suspect a faulty second-hand MacBook Pro, what steps should you take before purchasing a new SSD?
This action might remind you of what Dr. MacIntosh discussed earlier.
This drive is secured with FialVault. To unlock it, use the original device it was protected on. Replace the drives in their proper machines and launch Migration Assistant to move data from Air to Pro if possible. If your Air SSD offers more space and you prefer using it in Pro, first disable FileVault on Air, then create an unencrypted Time Machine backup of Air. Transfer any needed data from Pro to an external HDD or similar storage device. After backing up both sources and saving Pro’s data elsewhere, boot into recovery mode, erase the drive, reinstall macOS, and restore from Backup during setup. If you can’t reach the original machine, there’s no known way around it.
Thank you very much for your response. I’ll definitely implement those steps tomorrow at work. Your effort means a lot, and I’m glad you found the assistance helpful. Also, appreciating @Ryan_Vickers for connecting with you!
