I am building a budget gaming PC and the AMD Ryzen 3 4100 may be the only CPU I can afford. Is it worth it? Or should I save up for the AMD Ryzen 5 instead?

A 3300X or even a 3100 would be a superior option in the R3 lineup since they feature double the L3 cache, significantly boosting speed for gaming and various other activities. Instead of opting for a used Ryzen 7 3700(X) just a bit more expensive than the 4100, consider a 2700(X) which offers comparable pricing to the 4100 while delivering better performance. Alternatively, you might find a 2600/3600 model for less than the price of the 4100 and achieve much improved results.

You're looking for a used 2700X under $65, but what's your full budget?

The Ryzen 5 would perform significantly better if you're referring to the 5600/5600X models. On PCPartPicker you can find the 5600X for around $149, while the 5600 is also listed at $149. It seems a bit confusing, so it might be best to choose the 5600X.

It should be possible to achieve a score for that.

The Ryzen 3 4100 should ideally be priced under $50 for good value. At $69 it falls short compared to used alternatives that offer superior performance at a lower cost. The Ryzen 5 2600, for instance, is more affordable in used form, often matching or exceeding gaming performance, and typically retails around $50. Even with a budget tower cooler, you can still save money while getting a better CPU.

Country? Overall bugcount? Besides gaming? The Ryzen 4000 is useless and should be disregarded due to its quartered cache—it doesn’t even reach the 2500+ fclk these APUs (5300g, 5500, 5600g, 5700g) can handle. Even then, with that cache it wouldn’t matter; a used 3600 would cost around 50-60$. In used markets here in India you can still find a used 3100 for 50$. Don’t forget, you can save a lot of money on a used B3/450 board priced between 50-70$. Also, there are huge savings with the GPU, case, and PSU—recommend them highly and they’re essential for any budget build.

Your total budget for the PC is roughly $450 to $500. I’m purchasing from the US and enjoy doing some blender 3D modeling. I’m fine with used components.
