You can't use a Windows 7 product key for Windows 10. You won't be able to get Windows 10 for free either.

You can use Microsoft's Media Creation Tool to get and install Windows 10 for free, though I’m uncertain about using older activation keys.

Using the upgrade tool on the Windows site provides a key, but I suggest saving your files just in case you need to revert to Windows 7. I checked this with a PC last week.

In theory, you can upgrade from Windows 7 to 10 without cost. If you proceed, updating your old PC to version 10 should resolve the issue. But remember, certain keys tied to your hardware ID might not sync properly. Changing hardware could work, but it’s uncertain. In the worst case, contact Microsoft for a free reactivation.

Using the Windows 7 license, installing the "Get Windows 10" app through Windows Update grants you the right to upgrade to Windows 10 at no cost whenever you wish. This is the official process.
