It’s evident that convincing customers to purchase the new high-end Z790 motherboards is challenging. Besides the extra PCIe 4.0 lanes—probably unnecessary—the focus on memory speed seems to be the main draw. Speeds reaching up to 5600 MT/s are now supported under the JEDEC standard on the Z790 + Raptor Lake platform, with maximum OC exceeding 7000 MT/s. Most likely this is due to the updated IMC (integrated memory controller) on newer Intel chipsets. In reality, the IMC is typically built into the CPU rather than the mainboard. While some boards offer better RAM density thanks to PCB layout, it’s unclear if you could reliably hit 5600 MT/s as a JEDEC standard on Z690 with Raptor Lake either. And whether those top speeds are actually available on Z690 boards depends on BIOS support. If this were accurate, the marketing around the Z790 would be misleading. What are your thoughts?

In the past ten years, most second group chip sets for sockets have stayed consistent. The main advantage is reliable compatibility with the latest CPU models. Overall results are similar, with only slight enhancements.

It's accurate you noted the extra PCI-E lanes and quicker memory support, which are common features of motherboards. These improvements usually come in stages rather than being groundbreaking changes.

The issue lies in how these brands promote their products. They frequently highlight faster memory support and the new memory controller as key advantages. Even some tech YouTubers emphasize differences between z790 and z690 boards, often repeating marketing claims. It seems the focus is more on the memory controller than the CPU itself. There might not actually be a separate memory controller on the motherboards.

They focus on selling features you might not actually want or require. The marketing team exists to boost profits. If a company admitted they produce this item but it’s unnecessary for you, they’d likely struggle to stay in business. Sure, it might offer better performance, but for YouTubers it’s often pushed as a talking point. Most are open to it since alternatives are harder to find, and sponsors don’t pay much attention. It usually generates more revenue than ad revenue itself.
