Hello, I’m thinking about replacing my SSD. The 500GB SATA version isn’t sufficient and speedy enough. My motherboard doesn’t have any M.2 ports. An ICY BOX PCIe 4.0 x4 might work for a fast NVMe drive, but my board only has one PCIe slot remaining. I’m unsure if it will fit, since one source says PCIe 4.0 x4 and another mentions a x1 port, which is the slot with my RX 5700. My motherboard model is ASRock H410M-HDV with an extra PCIe extension for a PCIe 4.0 x4 M.2 slot. Links: purchase details, SSD retailer, and product pages.

You are correct, that is a 1x slot, and it's limited to PCIe 3.0 at that. At that speed, it could technically be marginally faster than SATA 3, but you'll mostly be throwing your money at a bad solution. If you want faster storage, you may very well need a platform upgrade. Edit: As to physically fitting, the slot looks to have a closed end, so no, it would not fit without modification.

I believe a NVMe SSD, even with PCIe 3.0, would significantly improve performance when loading files or playing games. Additionally, my amateur video editing often requires handling large files.

Not considering only one PCIe 3.0 lane. The real top speed would reach about 8Gb/s, compared to SATA3’s 6Gb/s—still not much of a jump you’d notice. Probably just a minor difference since most SATA drives already hit around 500Mb/s. You’d still have to modify the end of your 1x slot to fit it. If you decide to give it a shot, that’s what you’ll need. Keep in mind there’s also a high chance an old board can’t boot from an NVMe device.

There are a few points to consider: 1) Most adjustments won’t be obvious during regular driving; SSDs handle data quickly. SSD testing showed people preferred SATA models for speed. 2) Your processor is outdated, which could cause a slowdown when handling such rapid data transfers.
