Hello everyone, I'm trying to upgrade to a new motherboard because my friend's B350 has trouble running more than one RAM stick. Each stick works alone, but together it fails to boot. I'm considering the ASUS TUF GAMING B450M-PLUS II since it supports BIOS flashback. I thought flashing the BIOS might bring it up to work with the Ryzen 5 1400, especially if the BIOS is recent enough. I haven't noticed any warnings about BIOS limitations on Asus' support site. My friend uses an MSI B350 MORTAR and encountered problems with 1600 and 2400g first-generation chips but worked fine with a 2600 at 3000MHz dual-channel. The memory modules have performed well since late 2017, but only recently began showing problems, which leads me to believe the issue lies with the board itself. I don’t think there’s a BIOS corruption because I reinstalled a new BIOS and still faced the same problems consistently. I also noticed others had the same trouble with this model and switched to a b450 board to resolve it. Another point I overlooked is that the RAM isn’t being OC’d at the moment. When DOCP is turned on, the system encounters difficulties (I attribute this to Ryzen Gen 1 being...selective), but it worked before using the original speeds in dual channel. It’s unusual for RAM to suddenly start failing, especially since these CPUs usually don’t degrade so quickly—particularly given their low power draw of around 65W and keeping under 69°C even during heavy synthetic loads. I’ve thought about suggesting they upgrade to a newer CPU, but their budget is limited. They’re currently full-time at university and have funds available for a new motherboard right now. Luckily, they can run a single RAM stick without problems, though performance drops noticeably when they need it for studying or gaming.
Ryzen first generation is quite flexible, supporting DDR4 first for AMD systems. It only handles speeds up to 2667 MT/s with Jedec or XMP profiles. Zen+ second generation reaches up to 2933 and Zen2 up to 3200 MT/s.
