You're facing a common issue when trying to run Unity in Ubuntu. Since the editor freezes the whole system, switching between operating systems can be disruptive. With Arch installed separately, you have flexibility, but it might still require some workaround to keep things smooth across projects.

There are two approaches: verify if the issue remains consistent across different operating systems and desktop environments. If it does, report it upstream; otherwise, address it as a bug with Ubuntu-Devs/Ubuntu-DM-devs/Ubuntu-Unity-Devs. If you understand the suggestions, consider these steps: examine dmesg for graphics driver errors, turn off compositing (and other acceleration methods), change GFX servers, opt for a minimal UI, and look for comparable behavior. Possible workarounds include avoiding window minimization in favor of switching workspaces or activities—though these may not always be ideal. These observations can help others who seek similar solutions or fixes. Remember to be courteous, follow submission guidelines, and ask clear questions rather than demanding answers.

At that stage, changing to a different window also locks the entire system. The same applies when allowing the system to enter standby mode.

The smell suggests a GFX driver problem—could it be related to your graphics card or display?
