Hello
I plan to assemble a new PC and I really want to save some money on this one.
I have a lot of experience with overclocking both Intel and AMD, but I’m not sure about the Skylake CPU. It was rumored that base clock overclocking was possible again on Skylake?... Is this actually true? Because it would make an i5 6400 really interesting compared to the 6600K.
But I can’t seem to find anyone doing this.
It already has a full custom waterloop, so overclocking is definitely necessary.
What you mean by 'safe' refers to whether those models could be overclocked later using a base clock strap, specifically reaching 133-166 and 200 MHz for the K series. My concern is if it's possible to overclock the new Skylake CPUs with just the base clock, similar to how older CPUs like the i7 920 were handled.
It was a weak way to phrase it, sorry about that.
You definitely shouldn't try to overclock Skylake non-k models as you used to with the i7 920. You'll need a 'K' version.
The reason no one else seems to be doing it is because it's not available.
It is correct that the bclk clock is isolated from other components except the ram, and this can be achieved if the motherboard allows. I am considering an upgrade and planning to use an i5 6600 with an H170 motherboard that supports adjustable ram settings.
Yes, in theory you can overclock without a K model. Raising the Baseclock is a risky approach because it increases your DMI speed and PCIe lane speeds, which can lead to problems.
