I’m checking if it’s feasible to run Linux on a 500GB external hard drive. This could be helpful because you use multiple computers and want consistent apps and settings.

It's possible to start Linux from a simple abacus if you're aiming for that. It should function correctly.

It depends on the installer; just choose the external drive you want to use. It’s not guaranteed to work on every system, though. I’ve tried it before, and sometimes it performs better on some than others.

Choose your preferred Linux installation media. Save Rufus. Connect your external hard drive. Load the Linux ISO onto the drive and reboot your system (using the external HDD as the startup device.) If available, choose the option to test the operating system.

I’ve been testing Linux Mint on a 64TB USB stick (USB3.0) and everything has worked smoothly without any issues. Documents, videos, web browsing, and Minecraft all functioned properly. It also ran well on my desktop laptop and occasionally on other users’ devices.
