He assembled his setup last month while keeping his old GTX 1070 Ti. After talking to a fellow gamer, he’s concerned it might cause performance issues. Any tips would be appreciated.

It mainly depends on the display settings. Yes at 1080p, slightly less at 1440p, and no issues at 4K. Of course, game performance also plays a role, but this general guideline should work for most titles.

It largely depends on the game and its CPU usage. For titles using Vulkan or DX12, performance should be solid thanks to strong multi-threading, though some developers may introduce optimizations later in development.

Wait for ampere to fully start and observe the 3070’s performance and the 3300x under load. With the 3070 at higher resolutions it should handle it reasonably well, though in games requiring more than 8 threads the 3300x may face challenges. Keep monitoring, as we’re also unsure about their results.

I've tested an RTX 2080 Ti, which is claimed to match the RTX 3070 on a Ryzen 3100 (4.3 GHz all cores). I can say it does create a bottleneck, about 10 to 12 percent in very high FPS titles. Not enough to ignore the card's limitations at 1080p or 1440p. But once you hit 1080p or 1440p, it becomes excessive unless you turn on RTX support in games like Battlefield, where you'd then need a six-core CPU or better. If he’s really aiming for the 3070, switching to a 3600 would be wise. Still, if he isn’t playing at 4K, there’s little value in purchasing it unless it’s also used for productivity or science work.
