It looks like many files are present, but there’s significant extra work involved compared to writing directly into a single file. You can bundle them using tar and compare the transfer results.

Great suggestions. The USB connection might be the issue, even though it doesn’t clarify the inconsistent transfer speeds. We’ll likely need to wait for the OP to explain their configuration.

Edit: Re-reading your message, it looks like you intended to address the OP rather than me. Did you?

We must still determine the hardware specifications for the NAS. From my perspective, anything less than a complete PC performs poorly. I’ve never had to adjust Samba for optimal speed. The biggest issues only appear on Wi-Fi because the slow router limits performance.

You're new to mixed networks (Linux/Windows/Mac). If your client/server SMB versions don't match, performance drops significantly once the mismatched client connects to the server. This issue often resolves by adjusting the server to use only the standard SMB revision. AIO NAS devices frequently encounter this problem.

I mainly run Linux but both my mother’s PC and my laptop use Windows 10, which hasn’t caused any issues since the days of Windows XP. Probably because usually only I handle large data moves, and most of them are done in Linux via NFS anyway.

Feels nervous about responding right now.
Here are a few options:
1. I’m hesitant to reply at the moment.
2. It’s been tough financially lately.
3. I’m still figuring things out.
4. I’m not sure how to go ahead.
5. I need a moment before I answer.

It looks like you just discovered an issue with a brand-new cat6 patch cable. That can be frustrating!
