It often caused my system to crash, requiring a safe mode restart. Now it’s never turned on unless updates show up.

The Windows 8.1 update caused a boot loop and prevented starting in safe mode. I had to perform a factory reset.

During the Windows XP period I chose not to let it update automatically. However, Windows 7 and 8.1 support automatic updates.

I added Windows solely for gaming purposes. During the initial week, it restarted twice due to updates, which is why I didn’t enable automatic updates.

It informs you of new releases without downloading or installing anything. If you're using Windows 8 Windows Defender, it depends on Windows Update for virus signature updates.
