GTA 5 is available on Steam for online play. Many users share experiences about bans due to suspicious activity, even without actual hacking. The presence of modders and hackers varies by game, but it doesn’t necessarily ruin the experience. If you enjoy GTA gameplay and have a PS3 version, switching to PC should still offer fun. It’s worth trying, but be mindful of potential restrictions.

Not every game has scripters, it's still worth playing. I didn't realize how many of these intrusive characters were so bothersome to start with. Most of the ones I've seen just appear color-changing buses drifting through the sky.

About half the time someone will be a hacker (I’ve been there too). You might get banned, but if you get paid it’s usually okay. (Just kidding, I’m joking.) It’s still a good game, most hackers end up in hacked lobby groups while non-hackers stay in safe lobbies.

There are quite a few modders around. I've received money from them and have some connections, but I haven't done any modding myself and haven't faced any bans. So you should be okay no matter what.
