I've been thinking for a while tonight about a motherboard that has both an Intel socket and an AMD socket and was wondering if that would even be possible and if not why? I feel like it would be really cool to have the truely ultimate pc with both an Intel cpu for pure gaming performance and an AMD for productivity. All in all just an interesting idea I thought could make a neat discussion on how it would or wouldn't work.

Yes, it's feasible. Both systems share the same instruction set, which would simply need AMD and Intel to collaborate. However, this scenario is unlikely. Even without assuming close cooperation between the two companies, there isn't a viable market for such a solution.

I really don’t understand much about the technical side of things. What would it take to make this work? Maybe they could design a completely new chipset that supports both AMD and Intel processors together—like a server motherboard with dual sockets for different chips.

They used socket 7 in the past, compatible with both AMD and Intel processors, though it supports just one type of socket.

It’s likely enthusiasts would eagerly adopt custom boards for optimal performance in gaming, editing, and rendering. There’s no obvious barrier preventing someone from building a powerful, tailored board themselves.

The issue likely stemmed from architectural variations between the two companies' designs. It would be interesting to see if any Socket 7 boards are available today.

You’d need to find a way to connect everything properly, especially since instructions might come from different chips. Running a VM on an Intel system could help mimic an AMD environment.

Genuine interest and a real market aren't the same thing. The research and development expenses would be too high for either company. Technical expertise and resources would deter most people. While it's not impossible, building something this advanced would require massive investment in both money and time—something even large organizations wouldn't do easily.
