I haven’t tried it myself, but I know a fellow who’s an avid Civ player (over 1000 hours per match). He thinks Civ 5 is superior to Beyond Earth and essentially a remake of Alpha Centauri, though not quite as polished.

For fans of The Lord of the Rings, the BFME series is a good alternative to explore. The online multiplayer feature appears to have been removed, though I’m not entirely certain.
