The setup you described is technically possible but may face challenges. DDR5 supports up to two sticks, so combining packs into four sticks isn't standard. You might encounter compatibility issues or performance limitations. Double-check your motherboard and chipset support before proceeding.
Similar to most setups, inserting two additional DIMMs increases the load on the IMC. You might notice it becomes more challenging to maintain the same performance as with just two. It’s possible, but if you can, opt for the required capacity in two DIMMs for better compatibility.
Usually multiple modules on a single channel reduce the peak operating frequency. It may still function, but you probably won’t want those ultra-fast kits.
DDR5 on Z690 especially was kinda broken with 4 DIMMs. You could use 4 DIMMs and everything, but it dropped your maximum memory clock down to somewhere in the 5000MT/s range and had other compatibility issues along side crazy long POST times. Those have started being ironed out on Z790 boards and Raptor Lake CPUs, though there is still a roughly 200-400MT/s decrease in max memory speed with 4 DIMMs rather than 2 DIMM configurations for the same number of ranks per channel (6800MT/s is possible on 2x32GB configs, but 6400-6600MT/s is what's possible on 4x16GB configurations). If you don't need 4 DIMMs for something like 128GB of RAM, it's generally a better idea to stick to 2 DIMM configs, just so you don't have to deal with any possible weirdness.
Thanks for your feedback. I was concerned about potential downsides, but I’m glad you’re happy with the RGB memory setup across all four channels. It’s not a major speed drop, and I’m confident it will run smoothly.
Great feedback! It's disappointing when the available RAM doesn't align with the advertised specifications. Hopefully, they'll eventually offer compatible options for the Dominator or their latest Vengeance design.
