Checking if anyone has tried 128GB DDR4 RAM at 3200 MHz or faster on a Z490 motherboard with an i9-10900K is interesting. Many forums mention the 10900K only supports 128GB at 2666 MHz, and it seems Z390 boards don’t work. You’re considering a 64GB kit (two 32GB modules) at 3200 MHz now to expand later. Has anyone experienced this setup before? Thanks!

It's feasible on your board. What makes sense for you? With just a 10-core CPU, even virtual machines might require more memory than usual.

It might be possible for the imc to manage it, though I strongly question its ability to reach 3200 even with a significant boost like a major vccio or vccsa improvement.

Hey @jaslion, I will use this build for video editing and rendering. 64GB might be enough but I am just trying to keep my option open if I need to upgrade to 128GB later. Basically, as there is only 4 RAM slots; the only combination is either 64GB or 128GB until I use 32GB sticks in 2 slots and 16GB sticks in other two (not sure if that will be good idea). So, I am trying to decide whether should I get 32GB stick at 2666 MHz if I can't use 3200 MHz; just planning ahead so that I can keep my options open.

It varies based on your workload. Need 32 gigabytes? Then go with 16 instead.

I plan to use this setup for 4K video editing and rendering. I’m considering moving to 8K in the future and will need a GPU capable of handling that resolution. I’m thinking about allocating at least 128GB of RAM to support the workload. This is why I’m evaluating different RAM options.

32gb should cover even high resolutions like 8k. Why not opt for a 3950x? It performs much better in rendering compared to the 10900k.

You can examine a trident z kit typically in micron or b die formats, with 32 gigabytes available at 3200. For demanding tasks, consider a 3900x Good FPU; IPC will be excellent. Running 128 gigabytes comfortably with Zen 2 might not be ideal, but 64 should work fine.

Hey @jaslion and @TofuHaroto, I'm planning to run this build on MacOS. While it's possible to install on AMD CPUs too, I'm opting for native components. The Mac Pro caught my attention because it's upgradable, but I need to invest at least 17K to get the version I want and can't afford. That's why I'm avoiding Intel X processors on X299 boards—they're much easier to maintain, offer better support, and perform significantly better than the iMac, especially under heavy loads. It's the only Apple device in my budget that handles demanding tasks well due to thermal management.
