I’m not interested in other distribution details unless they’re useful here. I just need guidance on why Xubuntu won’t boot in non-UEFI mode on your desktop. You mentioned having the files on a flash drive and that when you try USB boot it jumps straight to Windows, but the installer only works in UEFI. It seems Windows is resisting UEFI setup, which makes it harder for the installer to proceed. If you can clarify what exactly you’re seeing—like error messages or any prompts—this would help a lot. I edited this on October 15, 2017, and issues are resolved.

Have you checked if the flash drive is positioned higher than the hard drive in the boot order settings?

Ensure compatibility when switching from legacy BIOS to UEFI. Verify the installation process works properly. Don't forget to save your Windows setup beforehand.

The process encounters an issue during setup, but you can try again.

I used a standard format like FAT32 for the ISO. Secureboot isn’t turned off, so I didn’t disable it. I added the EFI boot key directly from the EFI environment.

I just transferred the ISO files onto the flash drive. Writing it in a different format might be better. It’s set up with FAT32, and I’ve turned off Secure Boot. I think it should work if I adjust the method.

Avoid using the wrong method for bootable drives. Tools like Rufus are helpful. Ensure your Linux ISO is copied correctly—follow the recommended steps. For better results, consider an EFI installation and set Rufus to use FAT32 with EFI boot enabled.

I favor a tool named Pendrive Linux. I don’t recall using Rufus, though I’ve heard conflicting reports. I believe an official Ubuntu manual referenced Pendrive Linux.

Let me reinstall on Windows again. Used to do it with DVDs. Don’t ask.
