I'm considering getting an EK Waterblock for my 480, which already has a back-plate from XFX. The cooler seems about an inch or two longer than the PCB, so I'm questioning whether I should stick with the XFX backplate or go for the EK one. The EK backplate costs around $39 (AUD), which feels a bit steep compared to the block's price of $129. I was also thinking about modifying the XFX backplate to fit better.

The outcome largely hinges on how the backplate is mounted. Additionally, the screws' threads for the mounting may not match the XFX backplate if it applies.
In reality, considering the cost of your GPU and the block, are you really willing to take a very low price and risk damaging your investment?
Choose either the EK backplate or skip the backplate. I wouldn't jeopardize anything by trying to force incompatible parts from different vendors to function together.

The best match would be Ek's backplate. You might attempt to use the XFX one, though it could clash with the waterblock. Or, you could skip the backplate entirely.
