Hello, I'm just getting started with this. I'm setting up a home server mainly for fun. I have an Asus Z8NA-D6 board and two Xeon X5675 processors. My gaming PC uses an MSI RTX 2070 only to display the screen. When I first turned it on, I couldn't access the BIOS. Still, I managed to install Windows on a hard drive that I can boot from easily. The motherboard makes a lot of noise during startup and isn't very fast when it powers up. I thought it might be a bad board since I bought it from eBay. My office machine has the same Asus Z8NA-D6 with two Xeon X5550 and an old MSI GTX 660, which works perfectly. Today I decided to replace the boards because I prefer having a working BIOS on my home server rather than relying on one at work for a less-used machine. I swapped the boards and booted up the office computer (X5550 and GTX 660). What's happening with my home server? Is it related to the RTX 2070 or something else? Both boards are supposed to run the 1101 BIOS update for X5675 compatibility. On my home PC I even tried updating via a DOS USB to 1303 BIOS, but nothing changed, so I went back to 1101.
These boards come with an older BIOS setup, whereas the 20-series cards lack legacy boot functionality. The 660 model supports it, which is why it can access the BIOS.
I think the latest AMD graphics cards likely aren't the issue either. The Radeon VII seems to have worked well with my X58 setup.
Confirmed, my 6900 XT doesn’t boot into BIOS on X58. It seems Maxwell and Vega were the final ones to back them up.
Interesting. My setup was an MSI Gaming X 1080 Ti, possibly using an older BIOS. I reviewed my photos and saw both the MSI board and my RVII running on an EVGA X58 Classified with an X5675. Could the motherboard have played a role too? I faced problems with an MSI board that didn’t work well with Xeons, as they mainly supported i7s, which suggests some compatibility quirks with certain HEDT boards.
Can we find a way for it to function together? Or is this always going to be an issue?
It might be the BIOS that's the issue. The board I had was a Rampage III Black with a 990X, which should have solid BIOS compatibility. Of course, the 1080 Ti I was using (FE) had past problems booting on certain boards—like the X570 Master—so it could simply be headless support on that one while others couldn't.
