The ideal choice depends on your needs, but a Windows or Linux distribution with strong performance and good support is usually best. Consider factors like CPU, GPU compatibility, RAM, storage speed, and cooling if you're planning to run demanding games.

Windows 8.x offers marginally improved gaming speed, yet the overall gap remains minimal on powerful systems. Choosing an operating system ultimately depends on personal preference for usage rather than just gaming performance.

The current top choice is 8.1 due to its support for the newest Direct X features. Alternatively, a Windows 10 version that Steam doesn’t crash on could also work well.

In simple terms, if op reaches 8.1 it would offer the same capabilities as Windows 7 but with improved overall performance—not just for gaming. Running Classic shell would give you Windows 7 speed enhanced by Windows 8 features. Purchasing Windows 8.1 means you might receive a free upgrade to Windows 10, whereas buying Windows 7 now means missing out on that benefit.
