I just gave my girlfriend an Xbox wireless controller so she could play Witcher 3. She’s having trouble with her left hand and finds it almost as good as using the keyboard. I’m surprised she can’t reprogram the controller in the game—she needs the left joystick for movement and vice versa for simpler control.

I'm not sure about using the Xbox controller. Search for a mod for the Nexus in Witcher 3 and check if it works. I usually rely on a standard controller (like a generic Logitech) and use xpadding to map keyboard actions. It also has trigger functions—like joystick mapped to WASD, which shifts to SHIFT+WASD when you push the stick fully.

You might locate third-party applications that allow you to reconfigure buttons using software tools.

I'm aware of any ideas you might have. She's managing, but honestly I'd like her to relax and play a game on her own, without needing me to assist. I just hope she can gain a bit more independence.

I believe modifying the input file could be a viable approach. The link provided appears relevant.
