Given gaming is top priority, I’m wondering: should I invest in an x4 PCIe adapter to boost the M.2 drive to 800MB/s, keep the unused x4 slot free, or switch BIOS to 16/8/8 for a 1.6GB/s speed but lose some GPU performance? Or consider buying a used LGA1366 motherboard that avoids the PCIe slot problem? Ultimately, I want the best gaming experience while still using my new drive, and I’m curious if these tweaks will make a noticeable difference.
It depends on what you're trying to achieve. If speed is critical for your use case, improving performance could be important. Otherwise, the impact might be minimal.
I won't see the difference until I'm working with videos or moving big files, but most of the time it's about comparing the 100$ I just paid for this drive's speed to sticking with my SATA SSD.

Great! I'm focusing on purchasing items that last. I do have a nearby seller offering an EVGA extended MBO with a waterblock chipset, 1366 waterblock, and four PCIe x16 slots for $40. I was considering at least a 980 Ti or higher, but I don’t have the funds for an RTX right now. If someone is looking to buy any of these items, I might be interested. Regarding games, my family mainly uses the HTC Vive and emulators for N64, which aren’t too demanding on the GPU. I’ve noticed some FPS drops in certain VR setups, but performance improves noticeably after a fresh Windows 10 install and using an M.2 drive.
Confirm if the cards are operating at 16x/8x speed. For now, I’ll stick with a standard SSD. You probably won’t see a noticeable change unless you compare performance metrics.
