The PCI Gen 4 could be utilized for advanced computing needs.
Storage capacity seems to be the main issue right now. I’m seeing 5GB reads and writes from a Gen 4 NVMe drive, which is way more than the 500MB I get from a slow SSD. It’s hard to say for sure, but it looks like the future might bring even better options. Whether you actually need them or not isn’t clear. I wonder what improvements will come next month or next week—will it be something you wish you had already? If you need Gen 4, should you consider upgrading your motherboard?
If it's a Gen 4 NVMe device, mine qualifies and it's significantly faster than my previous SSD. Whether you need to take advantage of its speed depends on your use case. The testing I performed indicated minimal impact on boot times, and overall Gen 3 NVMe (especially at the top tier) performed quite similarly. If you choose to upgrade to Gen 4, the Sabrent Rocket 4.0 receives positive feedback.
I approached this purchase using these considerations, knowing I wouldn’t plan upgrades for years. This motherboard is meant to last me over five years, so why wait? If you’re someone who refreshes hardware every 12 to 24 months, it might not matter much—by the time something worth Gen 4 comes along, you’ll likely already have a new build. The decision ultimately rests with you.
I’m planning to choose the B450 series motherboard since the NVMe drive is Gen 3. I also have extra funds for additional SSD space, and the Ryzen 3000 series looks great for upgrades. Thanks for the advice!
