x570 & b450 featuring 3900x PCIe slots and SATA connections
Hey everyone - just moved from 2700x to 3900x. I haven't bought an X570 board yet before I sort this out. I faced problems with the B450 and 2700x using an NVMe drive, plus two GPUs causing SATA port issues and running GPUs at 8x and 4x. Coming from X79 and 40 lanes, the 2700/B450 upgrade really confused me. I was used to just plugging anything that fit and it worked fine. Short version: Can I run an NVMe SSD at 4x (PCIe3) with two GPUs at 16x without affecting SATA ports or lane speeds on an X570? Thanks!
Your CPU features 24 PCI-E lanes. Four lanes connect to the chipset, four go to the first M.2 slot, and the remaining sixteen lanes fit into the first PCI-E X16 port. If you add two video cards, these 16 lanes can be divided into two groups of eight. The chipset communicates with the CPU via those four PCI-E lanes, then generates extra lanes for PCI-E slots or other functions. It can produce up to eight PCI-E lanes in various configurations such as x1, x4, or x8. See the diagram below for a clearer view.
You're welcome! I'm glad I could help. Let me know if you need anything else!
