People are reporting issues with x570 Mobo not connecting via riser cables. You're considering a 3700x for pairing with your 2 1080ti, but it seems the vertical mount needs riser cables. Confirming whether riser cables are compatible with x570 for PCIe Gen 4.

PCIe4 compliant riser cables aren't available yet, so don't wait too long. But for moving your GPU around, existing graphics cards that support PCIe3 won't gain much benefit from PCIe4.

Your 1080 is compatible with PCIe 4.0, but the cables should still function. For extra safety, configure the BIOS so the PCIe slots operate at PCIe 3.0 rather than 4.0.

It seems some discussions on Reddit suggest limitations on running PCIe as a different generation in the X570 BIOS. The Hardware Canucks mention it’s being forced into a 2D mode, possibly referring to PCIe Gen 2. They note the RX5700 model only supports PCIe Gen 1, which might mean not all GPUs support higher speeds. There’s also a concern about compatibility for 3.0 generations.

I purchased a costly riser cable in October 2018 for my 1080ti and installed it in my new X570 with RX5700 running Gen 4. The community forum mentioned there’s no Gen 4 riser cable available, but I’m using it smoothly at Gen 4. I ran the latest 3Dmark PCIe feature test that supports 22GB/s on Gen 4, yet only achieved 12GB/s with my 1080ti in Gen 3 mode. It seems my riser cable is compatible with Gen 4 without any problems. I’m confident my BIOS is set to Gen 4.

Sure, others seem to handle X570 setups without issues. Do you know a maximum cable length before problems start? Like 20cm or 50cm? Also, our graphics cards still work on PCIe Gen 3, so we can adjust that in BIOS. But if we switch to Gen 4 NVMe SSDs, will changing the slot to Gen 3 affect them? I have a Phison Gen 4 SSD.

You have two Gen 4 NVMe SSDs and are making a big copy from one to another using a PCIe 3.0 slot. Large files may slow down the process. One drive won’t have enough space to store such a big file, so it shouldn’t matter. The 2080ti is a PCIe 3.0 device, so it’s unlikely to push performance beyond that. If you use an X570 with a 3.0 riser, problems could arise unless you configure it as PCIe 3.0 in BIOS.
