hello everyone. i hope this message reaches someone who's doing well. i'm just starting out with the PC master race and stumbled upon a problem. you're probably familiar with the upcoming rtx 3080 release. right now, i'm thinking about upgrading from my 1660 ti. i have an msi x570 a pro mobo and an older power supply. i really need a new one, but when i check pc part picker, it says something about the motherboard needing an extra 4-pin atx power connector that my current psu doesn't support. this connector is meant for extra 12v power, which could help with overclocking or high-power cards. since i'm still learning about pc components, i'm not sure if this will work with the new rtx 3080. any advice would be greatly appreciated. thank you for your current specs in case you need more details. cpu: ryzen 4 3600, mobo: msi x570-a-pro-atx-am4, ram: corsair vengeance lpx 16gbs, psu: evga br 500w, gpu: geforce gtx 1660 ti, storage: barracude 2tb hdd, ssd: samsung 970 evo 500gb.

Welcome to the discussion! On AM4, you'll typically need just one 8-pin EPS for cooling any chip you have, such as your 3600. I don't understand why MSI added an extra 4-pin connector on boards like the X570-A Pro—it would already be a constraint before the 8-pin EPS was introduced. In short, simply connect the 8-pin and it should work. What kind of power supply are you thinking about using?

I wasn't certain either, but I checked the PC Part Picker site and kept running into warnings. I thought maybe someone else could assist me. I'm searching for a model around 750W, which is the recommended power from NVIDIA. Do you have any suggestions?

WARNING! Important notice: The extra 4 pin is intended for LN2 use only. This setup allows subzero overclocking and sets a new record. The system I have is the Crosshair VIII X570 with a 16-core 32-thread 3950X. Both the manual and OverClockers confirm it's designed for LN2 and aggressive overclocking. Skipping the extra pin risks damaging your CPU and destroying your VRM. Let me know if this clarifies things.
