x540-t1CentOS Intel X540-T1 identification issue
I recently got an Intel x540-T1 10gb Ethernet card from my school, but it doesn’t show up in any operating system. I’ve used both the Windows IXGBeVf and Intel ixgbe installers, yet they can’t detect the card. I tried CentOS, which is where I’d normally install it, but the package build keeps failing with errors about static declarations and unknown fields. I’m really puzzled since I haven’t worked much with server technology before. The BIOS lists it as an unrecognized network card in an 8x slot. Many people say they’ve fixed this on CentOS online, so I want to try my luck too. I followed the GNOME installation for CentOS 7 and used the driver link you shared. I’m also open to other distros like Mint or Ubuntu if you have any tips. I can install the driver but still can’t get it to work.
I finally understood what was happening. It seems the specs mentioned that the card didn’t need a 16x slot, but it wouldn’t work in any of the 8x slots on the motherboard unless placed in a proper 16x slot. Only then did it register correctly in Windows. It looks like the motherboard’s BIOS simply rejected the card in anything smaller than a 16x slot. Once I adjusted that, everything worked smoothly and I was ready to go!
