b450 won't work with older Ryzen CPUs after the Zen 3 BIOS update due to ROM constraints. The X470 has a larger ROM, so it should support more generations.

The chipset controls the ROM quantity, not the board itself. Manufacturers decide how much is included. X470 and B450 both work with most AM4 CPUs if the correct BIOS is installed.

I understand, however the X470 model uses a larger chipset, and upgrading to the newest BIOS often limits compatibility with older Ryzen processors.

"Higher end boards" doesn't guarantee uniform ROM sizes across all models. Variations exist between different boards, and not every B450 board may have a larger ROM than some X470 boards.

Additionally, certain older Ryzen chips can't take full advantage of expanded ROM capacities. This means even with ample memory on the motherboard, you might only access a limited portion depending on the specific CPU supported. Always check the motherboard's official documentation for the list of compatible CPUs on AM4.
