Hi there, I'm trying to configure RAID 0 using two M.2 drives on an ASRock X299 Steel Legend. The hardware I have includes an i7-7820X on the X299 and two Samsung 970 EVO M.2 drives. Both devices appear in the BIOS, but when I enable RAID mode, only one drive shows up for RAID setup—specifically M2_2 in the lower slot, while M2_1 isn't visible. I followed the ASRock manual for RAID installation instructions. Could you help me understand why M2 RAID might not work between these two M.2 ports? One is connected to the CPU and the other to the PCH? The old Z270 board worked fine, so I'm not sure what's different here.

Typically, NVMe RAID is managed via the chipset, meaning connecting the drives to it is generally necessary. While some boards allow you to run it with one connected to the CPU and the other to the chipset, many don’t offer this option. I believe ASRock models are among those that lack this capability. Even if your setup doesn’t fit that description, using both drives on the chipset can still improve performance.

It seems unlikely to work without a compatible adapter. Using a PCIe M.2 device in the GPU's PCIe slot might not be feasible.

They should provide an adapter supporting multiple M.2 slots, ensuring both the CPU and chipset are properly connected.

All M.2 SSDs excluding SATA models are linked to the chipset. Ensure you have the most recent raid drivers installed. The M.2 SSD in the PCIe slot will also connect via the chipset. Given your high-speed SSDs, Raid 0 should likely boost performance.

Before making that change, both 970 Evo units are listed. You can find a screenshot showing the correct setup here.

Check the Asrocks site for the newest drivers, especially for storage-related ones. Make sure you're using the most recent BIOS updates.

The OS isn’t ready yet, but I can help set up Windows on the 2x 970 Evo in RAID 0 using UEFI/BIOS without needing any drivers.

IT could function but remains uncertain. Installing Windows on Raid 0 is risky because a failure in the raid could corrupt your Windows. Raid doesn’t always succeed, so there’s a chance it might not work at all.
