WTF x64 and x86 are confusing!
AMD receives payment for the x86 license from Intel, while Intel grants the AMD64 to AMD. Fun!
Intel has no option but to share rights with AMD, otherwise it would lose its monopoly. This means Intel can't sell its products outside the U.S., since other nations enforce anti-monopoly regulations. The same applies when Microsoft helped save Apple in 1997—especially before Android was around and Linux dominated the market. At that time, no one would have believed Microsoft wasn't a monopoly, even if technically it existed.
