Hi new here. I'm working for a regional food retail company, and we're now planning to apply self-checkout system in our new grocery store. It's a experimental project and if it works well we're gonna expand it to other branches as well. The store's currently using a smart system to prevent theft by security cameras.
We now wondering if we can use it to also analyze the behavior of the customers that are using the self-checkout system so that we can understand if the self-checkout system is a must-have or not. The security system is called Hikvision. Seems like a big one in this industry.
We've contacted the integrator and they offered BriefCam solution to meet our requirements. However the cost is quite high. Are there any other solutions that can also do the behavior analytics, such as dwelling time counting, people age/gender from the camera's view on top? We need a budget option to push this project faster. Thank you!
What is your budget?
The initial step would be to conduct an ROI (Return on Investment) analysis.
This means figuring out the cost the self-checkout system will incur compared to the savings customers gain by handling tasks and being supervised to reduce theft.
Probably there are various methods to perform these comparisons, leading to a general consensus value.
The ROI process is expected to shift and adapt as you gain more knowledge and new factors emerge.
Generally, any integrator or comparable company should be able to provide and record ROI figures for stores of similar size and location.
Additionally, there might be local regulations and laws to consider.

Essentially, we need to assess how much the self-checkout system will cost the store compared to the savings customers gain by handling tasks themselves and being supervised to reduce theft.

In most cases, any integrator or similar firm should be able to provide and record ROI figures for stores of comparable size and location.
Local regulations may also apply concerning recording and monitoring customer behavior—actions that many now view as private data, even if they don’t directly identify individuals.
Gather at least three to four proposals for installing the necessary system.
It’s important to understand your needs clearly and find ways to measure each requirement.
Be prepared to quantify how well each requirement is being met.
Be capable of measuring success or failure in any defined terms.
Record these requirements as a "Request for Proposals" and forward the document to the relevant companies.
Share your specifications with potential installers and clarify how you expect their responses to be structured.
Inquire about detailed costs—including upfront expenses, installation, maintenance, fees, repairs, insurance, warranties, reports, and analytics—without hidden charges.
Also ask what actions must be taken if theft is detected.
If theft cannot be prevented, consider legal steps to recover losses; otherwise, the insurance will likely be ineffective.
Good customers won’t steal even with monitoring systems in place.
Malicious actors will take advantage of any weakness immediately.
Please let the companies know you’re reaching out for further details and possibly an on-site inspection.
Additionally, keep in mind that contractual or confidentiality agreements may require legal representation to be involved before proceeding.
Thank you for your thoughtful explanation and guidance! I'll definitely remember this!
The firm I work for offers SkyREC, which is essentially a video management solution with analytics features. I’m also familiar with BriefCam, thinking it might be comparable yet pricier? Still, I recommend doing further research to understand your requirements better.
