Would you like me to review the parts you selected for building AdviceFeedback?
Hi everyone,
I hope this message finds you all well. I'm gearing up to assemble my first desktop PC and would appreciate some insights on what I've put together. I've spent about a week diving into research online to get familiar with the process. I'm aiming for a build around £1,000, which should handle most games smoothly at a reasonable frame rate—plus some room for future upgrades. I don’t want anything that’s overly perfect, especially not at high resolutions like 4K.
Any suggestions or feedback would be really helpful. Thanks in advance!
Approximate Purchase Date: October 2023
Budget Range: Approximately £1,000
Usage Priority (from most to least important): Gaming, multitasking
Monitor: No
Parts to Upgrade: All – I’m building from scratch
OS: Will install via USB
Preferred Parts Sources: No specific preference
Location: Scotland, UK
Parts Preferences: Currently considering an Intel CPU build but open to AMD Ryzen options.
Overclocking: No
SLI or Crossfire: No
Monitor Resolution: MSI 1920x1080 at 120Hz (1MS) – no plans to upgrade.
Additional Notes:
- I’m not overly concerned about the interior design, as long as the case looks solid.
- Most importantly, why am I upgrading?
I’m currently using a Medion Erazer P6705 Notebook (i7 8th Gen). I also need to find replacement monitor hoods somewhere—my screen frame clips are damaged. I’m thinking of switching to a desktop build with better specs so I can run games like Starfield more comfortably, but flawless 4K isn’t my goal.
Please let me know if you have any thoughts or recommendations.
Best regards.
If I could offer just one piece of guidance, avoid buying online. Visit your nearby Computer Store and inquire about their services. They can handle all orders and also provide a central point for any PC-related concerns. They often give advice too—usually at no cost!
The Asrock board you referenced isn’t suited for the unlocked 13th generation CPU. You may encounter thermal throttling. The 120mm fan is positioned inside the back panel to serve as a rear exhaust solution.

Thanks Why_me. That's a great help.
I've been swithering between the i5-12400F and the Ryzen 5600x. From what I have seen there isn't a huge amount of difference between the 2. Beyond that, 'm not sure it would be worth me paying a bit more and upping the Ryzen CPU to AM5 at this point? If i went with the Ryzen 5600x on AM4 then PCPartPicker would keep me right in regards to no issue with the motherboard?
In regards to the Video card, assuming they are of similar price - (this may be a silly question but bear with me.....) is it better going with a newer generation card with a lower GB, rather than an older generation with a higher? For example:
RTX 4060 8GB > RTX 3060 12GB?
Thanks again.
A good mobile cooler with solid VRMs ideal for a future 14700 upgrade is recommended.
6750XT offers solid performance for 1080p gaming for several years, and the PSU can handle any decent GPU upgrades later.
If you have the budget, I suggest this cooler to be compatible with a 14700 setup:
