Consider using a WIRED, HANDHELD trackball mouse with your computer in the living room. I’m thinking about switching from a wireless model to a traditional one because of RSI concerns. I expect the distance between my sitting position and the PC is roughly 13 feet. The cord length is around 4 feet, though I’m not sure. I can purchase either 10' USB 2.0 or USB 3.0 extension cables. However, I’m worried about signal issues since some sources say USB cables start losing signal beyond 14 feet. I don’t know if there are solutions for that range or how much it would affect performance. Would opting for a 10-foot USB 3.0 extension cable instead of USB 2.0 help reduce the distance-related signal loss problem? I’ll be using Firefox on Windows 10, and the mouse won’t be used for gaming.

The USB cable limit is around 15 feet, though this may change depending on the cable's quality.
Try to test the extension cable to see how effectively the trackball functions.
It might be wise to use a separate USB 3.0 hub powered independently between the host PC and the trackball mouse.

It should work perfectly. I've been using a 9' USB extension cable for the hub integrated into one of my displays, and there have been no problems (just slower transfer speeds with the touchpad, but using a mouse or keyboard has been fine.)
So switching to a 10' cable dedicated for a mouse should be acceptable.
