I'm curious about the AM5 release timeline. If I get a RTX 3070 or 3070 TI, I might need to upgrade my CPU to avoid performance issues. Should I wait or act now?

It largely depends on the games and such. A game limited by a 2600x is likely to run at 100fps or higher in most situations. Do you perceive this as a problem? Just upgrade components as needed; I don’t see an issue with 2600x on a 3070ti (or even 3080) in general, though sometimes the GPU isn’t fully utilized. That’s acceptable unless you encounter frame pacing issues, in which case you can simply cap your FPS.

The performance limitation seems a bit exaggerated; verify how much you can increase your CPU with your existing graphics card. Zen2+ offered solid gains, and a 3600 X or regular setup will deliver great results. Make sure to update your BIOS before making the change to avoid the issues I faced last night.

I intend to upgrade from 1080p at 144Hz to 1440p at 144Hz. Most games are MMOs and FPS titles.

I don’t care about the cost, so jump to 5800x right away (not aiming for 5900 because gains in games are only 1-3%). Just think about whether it’s time to upgrade now or hold off for AM5.

They don't need the AM5 to handle 1440p. Right now they're running ATS at 2560x1440 with a 5900X and 3060ti. The least lag seems from the RTX3060ti, which is still better than the GTX1650S they had before. Using a 5800X, 5900X or 5950X with a 3080ti or 3090 should work without problems. Lag increases when recording, so they're thinking about video capture instead. Edited March 17, 2022 by An0maly_76

Switching to 1440p would slightly ease the GPU limitation issue, but why stress over a CPU upgrade now? Consider getting a 3070ti first. If you're facing CPU constraints and aren't happy with the results, then upgrade your CPU—it won<|pad|>'s not be worse than what you have now. Just make sure your GPU isn't being downgraded.
